TEMECULA: ampm deal pushes Ultimate Interchange closer to reality

The existing offramp will be used to handle motorists headed west into Old Town Temecula Attorney. Currently, the two streams of motorists often clump together on a single offramp regulated by a traffic signal which combines with heavy traffic headed to southern Temecula Attorney and the Pechanga Resort & Casino. The queue of cars waiting to go through that interchange can stretch for more than a mile, creating a snarl that has a ripple effect on traffic on southbound Interstate 15. Most of the money for the project is in place, a cocktail of funds that includes more than a million in federal dollars, more than $4 million from the Indian Gaming Special Distribution Fund, more than $1 million in county money and millions more from a regional transportation account fed by development fees. Officials say it will take about 18 months to build and the city hopes to start accepting bids next year. Assistant City Manager Greg Butler said Thursday that the city will lease the station to the current occupant until the city is ready to pull the trigger on construction of the $45 million interchange. The city needed to pick up the parcel to accommodate the relocation of utilities in the area, such as the water and sewer lines. The project is labeled ultimate because it is expected to be the interchanges final upgrade and the partial cloverleaf configuration is expected to be able to handle anticipated traffic volumes until 2030. Last year, the city was short about $10 million to finish the project.

Most of the criticism focused on the potential traffic congestion that the mosque may create on neighborhood streets, although city planners said an independent traffic study showed the center would have minimal effects. Other speakers hurled visceral attacks against Islam, warning that the mosque would serve as a strategic foothold for extremists bent on undercutting Americas values and laws. "If you want to come here and not abide by our laws, you can just turn around and find another place to live," said Amy Pina, 42, of Temecula Attorney. Just as many residents, including dozens of Muslims living in the Temecula Attorney Valley, condemned those attacks as bigoted vitriol born of an ignorance of Islamic beliefs. We are not terrorists. We are victims of terrorists we are victims of fear," Suhail Fares told the council. Early in the hearing, City Atty.

Throughout the process, letters and e-mails have poured into City Hall from both critics and supporters. Our country was built on Freedom of Religion, all religions, not just the one I hold to," Pastor Brian Bell of the Calvary Murrieta church wrote to the Temecula Attorney Planning Commission, urging the city to approve the mosque. I believe there has been some in our community who assume all Muslims are extremists ... which is as foolish as all Christians believe in blowing up abortion clinics. Opponents of the mosque were divided among those who contended it would be a magnet for radical Muslims and those who feared that the facility would have a detrimental effect on traffic and the environment. Should Temecula Attorney become a center of even minor terrorist activity it is most unlikely that you and your colleagues will be held blameless when the situation surrounding the new center is so blatantly suspicious," Carlos Martello said in a letter to the citys mayor. The design of the proposed 24,943-square-foot mosque and center reflects a Mediterranean design seen in many Temecula neighborhoods, though the building will have traditional domes topped with crescent moons. The facility will be built in two stages, with the first limited to a 4,100-square-foot mosque to serve about 150 Muslim families living in Temecula Attorney, Murrieta and surrounding communities, Imam Mahmoud Harmoush has said. The Islamic Center, which has existed for years in a warehouse in one of Temecula Attorneys industrial areas, bought the property for the proposed mosque 10 years ago and has been raising money to build the facility ever since.
