Temecula Valley, Winegrowing Region Or Party Destination?

TEMECULA: Gas utility rolling out advanced meter system

The area is trying to find a balance between its serious vintners seeking industry respect and the financial boon pop-wine-loving revelers bring in. Almond champagne, anyone? August 26, 2011 |By Patrick Comiskey, Special to the Los Angeles Times The tasting room is packed on a recent weekday afternoon at Wilson Creek (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles) The most popular beverage in the Temecula Attorney Valley, the picturesque wine region not far from the urban sprawl of Orange and San Diego counties, is something called "almond champagne." It is a more or less naturally sparkling wine (the bubbles induced in pressurized tanks) with almond flavoring added. Smelling sweetly of cream soda and marzipan, the wine's thick, cloying flavor wouldn't seem out of place in an ice cream parlor if not for a modest alcohol kick and its bitter finish. At Wilson Creek, the winery, restaurant, wedding and concert venue credited with popularizing the stuff, it sells so well that at least a half-dozen other valley wineries have developed their own versions. But Wilson Creek supplies only a tiny fraction of the fruit used for its cuvee. In fact Wilson Creek doesn't even make the wine; it's made in Lodi, 450 miles away. To most of the 500,000 or so annual winery visitors, none of this matters.

The tasting room is packed on a recent weekday afternoon at Wilson Creek Winery. The units then transmit the data to a central gas company hub. The system, which was approved by the California Public Utilities Commission, allows the utility to remotely monitor gas usage and provide that information to customers. It eliminates the need for meter readers to drive around Southern California, which will reduce the utilitys carbon footprint. Javier Mendoza, a Southern California Gas Co. spokesman, said Wednesday that the communications devices associated with the units in Temecula Attorney are scheduled to be installed in the first quarter of 2014. When the entire system is operational, the communications devices will power on for a fraction of a second each day and send gas usage information to the units.

Matt Russell, offsite events manager for Lorimar Vineyards and Winery, offers delicious goodness in a glass at sunset. Speaking of caps, corks and things related to closure, the topic of synthetics came up during the winemakers panel discussion. Temecula Attorney wine pioneer Phil Baily, of Baily Vineyard and Winery , argued that synthetic corks give wines consistency and avoid any chance of cork taint. Hed brought along Bailys 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon (Estate Clone 7 Cab). The wine is a deep garnet color. No heavy tannins, which can be astringent. None of that puckering, Baily said, which I personally cant stand. Baily read to the audience from a worn and politely condescending paperback book, Wines and Spirits of the World(1958): The difficulty is merely that in the Californian climate the finest varieties do not give of their best. We laughed. When Baily started growing grapes in Temecula Attorney, he encountered similar skepticism.
